About NCPPA

NCPPA is a member-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in the field of community supervision. It serves as a unifying platform for criminal justice professionals and students across North Carolina by creating networking opportunities and fostering collaboration that builds meaningful connections and strong professional relationships. The association encourages the exchange of ideas and best practices, provides a forum to address shared professional concerns, and remains committed to upholding high standards while advancing public understanding of community supervision. Through leadership development and professional growth, NCPPA empowers its members, elevates the vital role of probation and parole officers, and strengthens public safety by ensuring members are recognized, supported, and prepared to lead the future of the profession in North Carolina.

Our History

The North Carolina Probation and Parole Association (NCPPA) was founded in Raleigh in 1994, with Sherry Pilkington serving as the first President from 1994–1995. In 1995, the inaugural Executive Board, supported by numerous charter members, drafted our constitution and by-laws to guide the association’s mission. Today, our membership includes active employees across all classifications, retirees, students, and stakeholders committed to advancing the probation and parole profession.

Over the years, NCPPA has successfully championed numerous improvements that have directly impacted our members and the profession. These efforts have led to:

  • Upgraded service weapons for sworn staff

  • Increased on-call pay

  • Revisions to the dress code to better accommodate field work

  • The issuance of smartphones for field personnel

  • Authorization for non-sworn staff to carry OC pepper spray

  • Adjustments to residency requirements for caseload-carrying certified employees

Our most recent efforts resulted in Division of Community Supervision leadership approving a new 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. shift option, giving certified employees greater flexibility in managing their required work hours and supporting work-life balance.

Professional Development and Networking

To further support growth and connection within the profession, NCPPA hosts an annual training institute, and divisional training workshops offer opportunities for professional development, networking, and engagement with agency leadership, criminal justice partners, and practitioners from across the state.

Community Service

NCPPA is deeply committed to service. In times of need, we come together to provide support through charitable initiatives, fundraising efforts, and partnerships with meaningful causes. Whether responding to statewide challenges or uplifting colleagues facing hardship, NCPPA is dedicated to strengthening both the profession and the communities we serve.

Shaping the Profession

Beyond advocacy and training, NCPPA plays a vital role in shaping the identity and future of probation and parole in North Carolina. We work to strengthen pride in our profession, foster unity across roles, and promote recognition of the critical service our members provide in North Carolina communities every day.
